Privacy Policy
Last updated: December 2025
Privacy First, Always
Dream Afar is designed with your privacy as a core principle. Everything is stored locally on your device. No accounts, no cloud sync, no tracking. We can't see your data because it never leaves your browser.
This policy explains our minimal data practices and your rights.
Introduction
Dream Afar ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our Chrome extension.
Unlike many services, Dream Afar stores all your personal data locally in your browser. We believe in privacy by design.
Information We Collect
Information Stored Locally
The following information is stored only in your browser using Chrome's secure storage APIs:
- Your widget configurations and preferences (which widgets are visible, their positions)
- Wallpaper settings (selected collections, refresh intervals, favorites)
- Custom uploaded wallpapers (stored locally, never uploaded to our servers)
- Todo lists and notes content
- Focus timer settings and site blocking preferences
- Weather location preferences
- Shortcuts and quick links you create
- Extension settings and customizations
Automatically Collected Information
We collect minimal analytics to improve the extension:
- Extension version and browser type (for compatibility)
- Aggregated usage statistics (which features are used, not personal content)
- Error logs for debugging (anonymized, no personal data)
- Installation and uninstallation events
All analytics are anonymized and aggregated. We cannot identify individual users.
Information We Do NOT Collect
- Account information (we don't require accounts)
- Email addresses or personal contact information
- Browsing history or websites you visit
- Content of your notes, todos, or other personal data
- Your uploaded wallpapers (stored locally only)
- Location data beyond what you choose to share with the weather widget
How We Use Your Information
The minimal information we collect is used solely to:
- Provide and maintain Dream Afar's functionality
- Improve and optimize the extension based on usage patterns
- Debug technical issues and improve stability
- Understand which features are popular to guide development
- Comply with legal obligations if required
We never sell, rent, or share your data with third parties for marketing purposes.
Data Storage and Security
Where Your Data Lives
All your personal data is stored exclusively in your browser's local storage using Chrome's secure storage APIs. Your settings, widgets, todos, and preferences never leave your device unless you enable Chrome Sync (which is controlled by Google, not us).
Security measures we implement:
- Local storage encryption: Chrome encrypts your local storage data
- HTTPS only: All network requests use secure HTTPS connections
- Minimal permissions: We only request necessary browser permissions
- No backend storage: We don't have servers storing your personal data
- Regular security updates: We promptly address security vulnerabilities
Third-Party Services
Dream Afar integrates with certain third-party services to provide functionality:
Wallpaper Sources
- Unsplash: We display images from Unsplash's API. When you view an Unsplash photo, their privacy policy applies. Unsplash Privacy Policy
- Google Earth View: We display curated images from Google Earth View.Google Privacy Policy
Weather Data
The weather widget uses weather APIs. If you enable weather, your location (city/coordinates) is sent to the weather provider to fetch data. This is optional and can be disabled at any time.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand how the extension is used (anonymized and aggregated data only). You can opt-out of analytics in the extension settings.
Chrome Sync (Optional)
If you enable Chrome Sync in your browser, your Dream Afar settings may sync across your devices. This is a Chrome feature controlled by Google:
- Chrome Sync is optional and controlled by your Google account settings
- When enabled, Chrome encrypts and syncs your extension settings to Google's servers
- We don't control Chrome Sync; it's governed by Google's privacy policy
- You can disable Chrome Sync at any time in Chrome settings

Data Retention
- Local Data: Stored indefinitely in your browser until you clear it, reset the extension, or uninstall
- Analytics Data: Aggregated and anonymized usage data retained for up to 24 months
- Error Logs: Retained for up to 90 days for debugging (anonymized)
You can delete all local data at any time by:
- Using the "Reset Extension" option in settings
- Clearing browser data in Chrome settings
- Uninstalling the extension
Your Rights and Choices
You have full control over your data:
- Access: All your data is stored locally and accessible to you at any time
- Correction: Edit or update any settings, widgets, or content directly in the extension
- Deletion: Delete all data by resetting the extension or clearing browser storage
- Opt-out of Analytics: Disable analytics in extension settings
- Data Export: Export your settings and data from the extension settings
- Opt-out of Chrome Sync: Control in your Chrome browser settings
